The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town plans to spend R87 million on generators and uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems for bulk water and wastewater treatment plants, as well as sewage and water pump stations, during the current fiscal year.

After three years, this investment will rise to R216 million.
The following facilities stand to gain:

Eight sewage pump stations can be found in Melkbostrand and Bloemkombos at Dalebrook, Racecourse, Century City Main, Narcissus, Lagoon 1, Sanddrift East, and 11th Avenue.
Helderberg College, Smuts, Bakkerskloof, Everite, Burgundy, Strand Reservoir, Eksteen, De Novo, Nassau, Wingerd, Welgedacht, Dido lower, Clovelly, Silwer Boom, and Mountainside Reservoir (lower) are among the sixteen locations of water pump stations.
There are eleven bulk water treatment plants located in the following locations: Faure, Plattekloof, Glen Garry, Tygerberg, Newlands(x2), Helderberg, Monterey, Paarden Island, and Molteno.
Six wastewater treatment facilities, including Klipheuwel and Borcherds Quarry (5)
“To help lessen the impact of load-shedding on its infrastructure and ensure that water and sanitation services continue as best they can during high, prolonged stages, the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate has been implementing a multi-pronged approach of ongoing measures.”

These initiatives consist of prioritizing the installation of UPS systems and generators, keeping maintenance personnel on call, and employing mobile pumps and sewage suction trucks as backups to help prevent overflows whenever feasible. In order to help monitor the sump levels at the facilities, the City has also invested R16 million to replace all sewer pump stations with telemetry, according to Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the member of the mayoral committee for water and sanitation.

He continues, “Even though these steps might lessen the effects of load shedding, tap water is not safe to use or drink during load shedding. However, water supply interruptions and sewage overflows might still happen
